  • Fluorite is a mineral that used to be used mainly for decorations. It is fairly soft so it can be easily carved.
  • In recent times it also has industrial uses.
  • Fluorite is used as a source of fluorine in hydrofluoric acid and fluorinated water.
  • Fluorite comes in many colors.
  • Fluorite crystals tend to be cube shaped.

  • These are very small pale yellow fluorite crystals that are cubic.
     
  • Fluorite is often found in dolomitic limestone in Southern Ontario.
     
  • Sphalerite, the dark brown gemmy crystals, is a mineral that is also often found in the same rock formations.

DESCRIPTION: This slab of bright green fluorite was cut with a diamond blade. It’s surface is smooth but has not been polished. Because it is translucent, it is possible to see the contact zones of where the mineral grew.
